Dental crowns can restore damaged teeth in Charlotte NC

Dental crowns are caps placed over a tooth that restore the natural shape and size of teeth. Because they are strong, they feel like normal teeth and can also drastically improve patient’s appearance.

Why does someone need a dental crown?
If there is a significant amount of tooth decay, a dental crown can protect a weak tooth. The crown will prevent the tooth from breaking, and can also hold together parts of a cracked tooth. Additionally, dental crowns can be used to hold a dental bridge in place, cover severely discolored teeth or even cover a dental implant.

Materials used to make crowns
There are a variety of materials used to make crowns that are available to the cosmetic dentists. Typically, permanent crowns are made from metal, porcelain fused to metal, resin or ceramic. Many people use metal crowns because less tooth structure needs to be removed, and tooth wear to surrounding teeth is kept to a minimum.

One alternative to metal dental crowns is porcelain fused to metal dental crowns. These are matched to the color of the adjacent teeth. These do not typically last as long as metal crowns and can chip or even break off. Sometimes the metal can show through at the gum line, especially as gums recede.

All-ceramic and all-porcelain crowns provide best match to natural teeth
For people in Charlotte NC region that are concerned about matching the dental crowns to their natural teeth, all-ceramic and all-porcelain dental crowns may be the best option. Also, there are some people with metal allergies; they appreciate the porcelain and ceramic crowns. The downside to these types of crowns is that they are not as strong as their metal counterparts. But, they are a great choice for teeth that are highly visible when you smile.

Temporary versus permanent dental crowns
The biggest difference between temporary and permanent dental crowns is where they are created. Temporary crowns are often made in your cosmetic dentist’s office; where permanent crowns are typically made in a dental laboratory.

  1. The post is pretty interesting. Dental Crowns are one of the tools dentists use to help protect weak teeth, preventing them from breaking and further disrupting the mouth. They are used for restoring an already broken tooth, or one that is excessively worn.
