In the Greater Portland area, there are still many people who are afraid of the dentist. Are you one of them? Well then, you don’t have to worry about a thing! In this age of dentistry, there is no reason for dental patients to suffer pain and anxiety every time they visit the dentist. A pain-free visit with a dentist is now possible.

Putting off dental visits

We all know going to the dentist regularly is an important part of keeping good oral health. However, pain and discomfort may stop us from doing so. Now, we no longer have to put off our dental check-ups. With sedation dentistry, we can finally get the dental care that we need without the anxiety and discomfort.

Types and benefits of sedation dentistry

There are two common types of sedation dentistry. First we have anxiolysis. This is your typical light sedation procedure where you will take an oral sedative before you leave home. This oral sedative can affect the way you drive so it is best that you have someone drive for you on the way your dentist.

The second one is what we call oral conscious sedation. For this one, you will need to take an anti-anxiety pill at home and then an additional dose once you’re at your dentist’s office. This will make you feel relaxed and comfortable. During the procedure, you may fall asleep or be conscious the whole time. Either way, you will feel safe and calm as your pain-free dentist works on your dental procedure. When it’s all done, you will hardly recall your visit to the dentist.

The obvious benefit is that this procedure makes them comfortable. This procedure helps them put aside their fears and apprehension so they will get the dental care they need. It is interesting to know that when our anxiety is high, we have lower tolerance for pain. With sedation dentistry, our gentle dentist  in Portland Maine lowers our anxiety so in turn our tolerance for pain will increase.

Sedation dentistry may be sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry. However, patients do not always fall asleep. They are conscious but may feel groggy. They are awake enough to communicate with their dentist. Anxiolysis and anti-anxiety pills will make us feel comfortable and relaxed when we visit our dentist, making being afraid of the dentist a thing of the past.
